- Abstract
- This work focusses on an analysis of the floods which took place in July 2021 in the town of Aiseau-Presles and more specifically, in the area around the confluence between the Biesme, a small river and the Sambre. This study is organised around three parts. In the first one, the general context of the issue is laid out, going over the mining past of the region, the important floods that occurred in close history and the geographic configuration of the study area. Then, in the second part, we can find the explanation of the methods that were implemented to create the hydrograph used in the study, as well as all the necessary information for the modelling of the July 2021 floods. We can also find the first simulations of the area subjected to the corresponding rainfall as well as the simulation that will be used as the baseline simulation. In the last part, the mitigation features that were considered are explained. The first of these features is the increase of the pumping power of the pump that is already in service. The second one is the enlargement of the width of the Biesme at the confluence with the aim of limiting the rise of water that the current bottleneck creates. The last one is the increase of the height of the dykes that run alongside the Biesme. After examining all the simulation results, it is established that none of these mitigation features used on their own would have stopped the floods of 2021 but they could still be useful in case of smaller rainfall events.
