Abstract
The interest of the present thesis is to propose a new critical edition, based on the study of six different witnesses, together with a translation of and a commentary on the first book of the De hortis Hesperidum, a neolatin georgic that the Neapolitan humanist and diplomat Giovanni Gioviano Pontano probably began to write at the end of the fifteenth century and completed a few months before his death (1503). This poem, largely inspired by Virgil's Georgics, contains, in addition to numerous precepts on citrus growing, a remarkable number of digressions of a mythological, autobiographical and encyclopaedic nature. Its singularity comes largely from its dual nature as a mythological-didactic poem, from the completely new interpretation it offers of the myth of Adonis and from the metapoetic dimension of particular passages that allusively define the author's poetics, marked by a constant tension between classical imitation and personal inspiration.
