Abstract
The main objective of this master thesis is to find out the equality in equestrian sport at the professional level, and more specifically in show jumping, a discipline marked by formal gender integration (i.e. men and women competing together) since 1964. To analyse this, our research is based on a qualitative study with 32 interviews with male and female riders and professionals from the equestrian world. In order to interpret and analyse the results, we will focus on the perceived psychological and physical differences between male and female riders and the opportunities that these two genders feel they have to develop their careers as professional riders. We will also look at the gender norms present in this community. However, it is important to take into account that our small-scale empirical study does not offer a representative inquiry into the reality of the entire equestrian world, but rather is an explorative starting point into perceptions of gender (in) equality by a limited sample. Since equestrian sports are one of the few sports that are not formally segregated by gender, we believe that it is an ideal context to study (subtle processes of) (in) equality.
