- Abstract
- In the aftermath of the Great War, Fiume (Rijeka in Croatian) became the scene of a unique and unrepeatable political experience: nationalists, revolutionaries and artists occupied the city from September 1919 to December 1920 under the command of Gabriele D'Annunzio. Among the protagonists of the Impresa di Fiume was a Belgian intellectual, Léon Kochnitzky, author of the memoirs La Quinta Stagione o i Centauri di Fiume, in French Le Bal des Ardents ou les Saisons fiumaines. Although the text is often quoted in studies of the Fiume issue, so far it has only been mentioned to supplement historical documents, with the aim of recreating the "festa della rivoluzione" atmosphere. Such studies seem to neglect the singularity of the text, limiting themselves to a comparison with other writings on the Fiuman memory, without considering its literary specificities. One hundred years after its publication, La Quinta Stagione deserve an in-depth study that goes beyond historical and political considerations. This thesis obviously takes these fundamental aspects into account but proposes an original key to interpretation: reading the testimony as the narration of an initiatory experience. By crossing different disciplines of humanistic studies, such as those on the imaginary or cognition, we will examine the following representations: the image of the author in the text, the Fiuman microcosm and the figure of D’Annunzio.
