Abstract
This MA dissertation examines the challenges encountered by French-speaking Belgian learners of English, focusing on their ability to understand and use false friends—words that appear similar in English and French but differ in meaning. It investigates the influence of individual factors such as age, language exposure, and multilingual competence on learners' performance. The research involves secondary school pupils and adult learners, who were assessed through various tasks designed to measure their proficiency with false friends. By analyzing these individual differences, the study aims to provide insights for developing more effective teaching strategies that address the specific needs of learners dealing with false friends in English.
