Abstract
enThis study examines the effects of the migration path of six Syrian transgender women refugees in Belgium on the construction and affirmation of their gender identity. Their migration path, initiated by the civil war, but also by the stigmatization and violence experienced because of their gender identity, enabled them to leave a controlling family and community context, imposing on them the norms of a patriarchal, heteronormative society. Far from the family and community control experienced in Syria, the participants in this study were first socialized in places reserved for the LGBT community in Turkey and Lebanon, where they began a social and medical transition. Their arrival in Belgium enabled them to complete the medical and legal transition, affirming and constructing their gender identity.
