- Abstract
- This thesis analyses the classification of the conflict in Transnistria under International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and explores whether Transnistria can be considered an occupied territory by proxy. The research finds that the conflict, due to the substantial military, political, and economic support from the Russian Federation to the Transnistrian separatists, should be classified as an international armed conflict. This reclassification is supported by the “overall control” test and suggests that Russia's involvement meets the criteria for a belligerent occupation by proxy.
