Abstract
This study aims to look over the dependence of the semiconductor industry on the Asian countries and the ability to observe it with commercial data. We review the literature on the product vulnerabilities in the EU and draw a description of the semiconductor industry, focused on the manufacturing side. This review is completed by the outlining of several shocks and their impacts on several sectors. To discern the usefulness of trade data in the distinction of dependence, we use CEPII database and define a clear ensemble of products delimiting the principal categories of semiconductors. The methodology adopted in this research consists of comparing the data with the level of production in 2019 found in the literature and evaluate the evolution of quantity and prices from 2012 to 2022. For a measure of the countries’ productivity, GDP per capita is shown side by side with the price level to evaluate a possible correlation. The main outcome claimed by this research is the impossibility to establish a clear and accurate benchmark of the economic situation of the industry at the country level. We then discuss the incidence of a policy making based on commercial data.
