Abstract
The present thesis aims to describe the existence of thriller as a theatrical genre. To do so, we will first determine what constitutes a thriller. We will look at what defined it in the field of literature (by addressing the detective novel and more specifically, the suspense novel), as well as in the field of cinema. We will then compare these structural components with those of the Greek tragedy, a founding genre in the occidental conception of theatre. This rapprochement will reveal many similarities that support the place of thriller as a theatrical genre. Finally, we will illustrate our theoretical part with an analysis of the show Merveille, a poetic and choreographic thriller, directed by Jeanne Dandoy at the Théâtre des Martyrs in Brussels in February 2023. In addition to representing an example, the analysis of this case allows us to legitimize the existence of thriller once again as a theatrical genre. This research endeavours to defend the name of the thriller to characterize the shows responding to the codes of this genre.
