- Abstract
- This Master thesis consists of the subtitling of the movie Out in Ost-Berlin: Lesben und Schwule in der DDR. This documentary by Jochen Hick and Andreas Strohfeldt presents the life of thirteen homosexual persons who lived at the time of the German Democratic Republic, when homosexuality though legally decriminalised, was nonetheless not socially accepted. The paper is divided into three parts: the introduction, the subtitles, and the commentaries. The thesis’ introduction focusses on the process of legal decriminalisation of homosexuality in East Germany as well as in West Germany. The aim is to depict the different stages and reasons that led to this decriminalisation, from a legal and a social point of view. After the subtitles of the documentary, the third part includes the translation commentaries, which highlight the different difficulties and problems that were faced while subtitling, as well as the chosen solutions with their justification. This part also describes the typographic rules and the technical parameters observed while subtitling. Lastly, an exhaustive bibliography of the consulted sources concludes this thesis.
