- Abstract
- This thesis examines the media coverage that the student artist collective The Leeds 13 received on its group show Going Places, which generated a national media frenzy in Britain 1998. Using critical discourse analysis, the articles are analyzed in three different levels: a textual analysis, an analysis of the discursive practice and a sociological analysis. The objective is to further comprehend the social dynamics of the Britain of the late 90s that led to the media outrage in an attempt to determine the social impact of the show in the society of its time as well as its relevance today. The findings show a heavy journalistic bias by the sociopolitical agenda of media. We discuss further on the functioning of media, the future of journalism and the incidence of art activism in societal change.
