- Abstract
- Inspired by the cinematographic studies related to gaze, this thesis questions pop/rock music under the prism of genre. By questionning its content as well as its forms, it intends to detect masculine and heteronormative canonical practices as well as its potential upheavals. Based on the concepts of representation, subjectivity and identification, this work aims to estimate how an alternative, feminine, subversive musical aesthetic is analyzed and constructed in a given era and context. To do so, the case of the Bikini Kills, and the case of the Riot Grrrl more generally, the popular feminist punk movement of the late 1990s, is adopted as a case study in order to identify the different tools and issues raised by their "girl revolution".
