Abstract
The aim of the present research is to look into the link between the European Union (EU)’s migration and foreign policies. In order to investigate the relationship between these two policy arenas, the focus is placed on EU maritime operations in the Mediterranean and more specifically, the operations EUNAVFOR MED Sophia and Irini. The research explores the role these operations play in the relationship between the EU and Libya. It first provides some background information on the EU competences regarding migration and foreign policies. It then presents information on the maritime operations, followed by a section identifying the key characteristics of the relationship between the EU and Libya. Finally, it interrogates whether the concept of Human Security is compatible with the way the EU maritime operations are conducted in the Mediterranean.
