Abstract
This master's thesis involves carrying out a complete life cycle assessment (LCA) of a best-in-class open steel car park in order to determine the model with the lowest environmental impact. The aim of the study is to assess the global warming potential of different car park models, taking into account various construction parameters and strategies that can help reduce environmental impacts. The thesis explores the various aspects that can influence the environmental performance of the car park, including the choice of quality of structural steel. In addition, the study examines the use of cellular beams, known for their lightness and efficiency. Additionally, the thesis explores the implementation of composite methods, which involve the use of a floor and connectors on the beams to ensure excellent collaboration between steel and concrete. To further reduce environmental impact, the study considers the use of low-carbon materials or reused materials in the construction of the car park. By varying these construction parameters and exploring different strategies, the thesis aims to generate a range of car park models and assess their environmental performance using LCA. The LCA methodology allows a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impacts associated with each model, focusing specifically on global warming potential. The results of this research will help to identify the most sustainable design options for open steel car parks, providing valuable information for the industry and promoting sustainable practices in the construction sector.
