Abstract

enThis master's thesis is largely based on the study of pronominal and nominal forms of address present in the Spanish Netflix series Elite. In this work, two main themes will be addressed. The first theme will focus on the study of the translation of forms of address from Spanish into English and French, and the subtitling methods used. The aim is to verify if the translation produces a different system of address from the original Spanish version, to understand what are the elements that influence these variations, but also to note the impacts that these changes can generate on the good reception and understanding of the message by the spectator. The second theme of the study is the evolution of the address system within a couple. The objective is to understand how the address system evolves within an adolescent couple by analyzing their interactions from the first interaction to the development of a romantic and sexual relationship. To carry out this work, a corpus containing all the interactions of couples of the 8 episodes of season 1 of Elite transcribed in Spanish, English and French will be used. This comparative table makes it easy to see if the equivalences obtained in the meta languages have similar forms of address to the original interaction. This corpus allows us to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the translation from one language to another as well as help us to analyze the different translation and subtitling techniques in depth. In addition, the corpus provides a global view on the evolution of the address system between a couple according to the variations of address (e.g. from the T-form to the V-form or vice versa, from a pronominal form of address to a term of endearment, etc.). In this way, a hypothesis on the evolution of the address system within a couple based on a quantitative source will be created to support the argument. Finally, the paper concludes with a presentation and discussion of the results of our research as well as a discussion of future research perspectives in the field of the study of pronominal and nominal forms of address.
