- Abstract
- This study is concerned with the individual and text-inherent factors that influence the perception of humour in sitcoms, particularly Friends. To answer this research question, a quantitative and a qualitative study were conducted to investigate the influence of a number of factors on the treatment of eight scenes from the series Friends. To this end, a questionnaire of eight scenes from Friends was presented to 107 participants, of whom 52 were French speakers, 31 were Chinese speakers and 24 were English speakers. In general, it was found that both the cultural background of the participants and the frequency with which Friends was watched by the participants influenced the perception of humour in the series. In fact, the results show that different cultural backgrounds do not perceive humour in the same way. Furthermore, familiarity with the series leads participants to find the series more humorous, in contrast to those who are not as familiar with the series. However, the results suggest that conducting an exchange in an English-speaking country, as well as the duration of the exchange, the genre, the level of English and laughter in the background do not influence the perception of humour.
