- Abstract
- In Belgium, few modern languages and literature students choose to study the “language of the other community”. In other words, Dutch in the French-speaking community and French in the Dutch-speaking community are not the preferred choices for these young academics, who favour English and Spanish. Given this observation, one can wonder about the reasons explaining this situation. More precisely, in Wallonia, what are the differences between students choosing Dutch and students choosing other languages that can explain this divergence in the choice of studies? In Flanders, do students who study French have any similarities with their Walloon counterparts who study Dutch? Are they motivated by the same reasons? This master’s dissertation aims to answer these questions and capture the profiles of the different groups using a quantitative study among Belgian students of modern languages and literature. In concrete terms, questionnaires were distributed to this public on both sides of the language border in order to collect data relevant to the present research.
