- Abstract
- The aim of this paper is to analyse the evolution of the economic divergences between European countries and to display the different measures that need to be put in place to avoid, or at least to moderate, their fragmentation. The paper is structured as follows: First of all, we are going to discuss the Economic and Monetary Union, and its functioning, by describing the beginning of the Union, displaying the different steps of its construction and depict the positive and negative aspects of it. Formerly, we are going to analyse the economic evolution of the countries that compose the Union since the introduction of the euro currency. Moreover, we are going to develop a model that aims at forecasting the degree of tension among the Economic and Monetary Union. Finally, we are going to discuss the measures that have been taken in the past to save the euro and discuss the ones that have been taken or should be taken to counter the COVID-19 crisis.
