- Abstract
- This work offers an overview of the sexism present in the English-speaking and French-speaking caricatures in the written press dating from the 1940s until today. Its purpose is to identify the different stereotypes that emerged at certain times and the reason why they were used by cartoonists. To do so, we analysed a corpus of 44 cartoons from anglophone and francophone newspapers based on the analysis grid of Tremblay and Bélanger (1997). Using this method, we were able to determine two habits at different periods. The caricaturists sometimes represented women in their traditional roles of housewife or maid, while in other periods, the artists depicted them as sexual objects.
