Abstract
The heritage built in cob occupies a significant place in the landscape of the Cotentin territory in Normandy. However, this heritage is largely unknown today and suffers from a pejorative image, despite renewed interest from the scientific community and local associations since the 1970s. The objective of this study will therefore be to analyze the issues of conservation, enhancement and perpetuation of this small heritage by trying to meditate on avenues of reflection. This work is mainly based on recent researches focusing on raw clay techniques which have described its historical context and its technical particularities. This thesis is supplemented by field observations and meetings with building industry professionals, to better reflect the current realities of heritage in cob in the Cotentin. This article will attempt to highlight the possible strategies and those at work for the protection of this small heritage. It highlights the tensions between safeguarding traditional know-how and the current realities of the building industry, as well as between the desire to protect a heritage witness of an ancient past and current needs and uses in terms of building in rural areas.
