- Abstract
- Booming in the United States of America, the Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) is a type of remuneration that becomes more and more sought after by employees. The mechanism is simple: founders grant stock options at a pre-defined price to workers with the aim to share the wealth created through the professional journey. At the start of the 21st century, the model started conquering Europe, and more startups and larger corporations set up this scheme. As the concept becomes a tremendous tool in the attractiveness of startups, this Master thesis focuses on the Belgian entrepreneurial landscape and the development of this tool. Consequently, this study seeks the main significant effects of this sharing plan on the Belgian startup ecosystem. As a result, three main significant effects were identified. Firstly, the employee stock option plan has a significant and positive impact on employees’ loyalty and accountability, where this loyalty directly enhances the retention effect. Secondly, this financial instrument is defined by beneficiaries as an efficient and valuable tool in the remuneration package. Finally, this employee-oriented scheme positively influences the company culture while being a significant indicator of it.
