Abstract
When we talk about seismic design, current standards emphasise a traditional force-based approach, based on simplifications and strong assumptions, so that there is little connection with physical reality. Indeed, a seismic event imposes displacements (or deformations) on a structure, and not a set of forces. Furthermore, the damage caused is directly related to excessive deformations. Therefore, if displacements are controlled, damage is expected to be better controlled, giving designers the freedom to play with the multiple combinations of ductility and resistance of a structure. Therefore, in its second generation, Eurocode 8 intends to expand the design methods by proposing a displacement-based approach. Although such an approach is already present in the design standards, it still lacks simple verification criteria before it can be used for design purposes. The final project proposed in this document is a humble contribution to the second generation of Eurocode 8, focusing on the issue of harmonising the two design approaches: force-based and displacement-based, with emphasis on reinforced concrete frames. Indeed, the person in charge of the project should logically obtain a similar design regardless of the approach he decides to adopt. To this end, the force-based and displacement-based methods should be consistent.
