- Abstract
- In this thesis, we studied the behaviour of the US, Japan and South Korea during a power transition period, precisely during Trump’s term 2016-2020. In that period of time, the US didn’t act as a dominant power, while both Japan and South Korea behaved as middle powers seeking autonomy from great powers, China and the US. In implementing the FOIP and NSP-NNP strategies, Tokyo and Seoul are forming coalitions and building networks, using diplomatic manoeuvres while enhancing their security and economic presence in the region. By forming these networks, both countries are seeking to defend the regional order that is transforming into a “networkisation” system away from the ancient model the “Hub and Spokes” system.
