- Abstract
- This master's thesis deals with the influence of the context on the understanding of German idiomatic expressions. In an online survey, the participants in this study were asked to explain 16 idiomatic expressions that were presented in a context. A distinction was made between three categories of context: long context, medium-long context and short context. The results of the study showed that the participants could interpret the idiomatic expressions presented in a long context more correctly. The idiomatic expressions presented in a medium-length context came second, and the expressions presented in a short context came in last. One difficulty in evaluating the results was the fact that some of the idiomatic expressions were already known to the participants, which is why the influence of the context is not always clear.
