- Abstract
- In this research, we propose to make a contrastive study of euphemism in French and Vietnamese. Euphemism is a figure of speech often used in life but little known and appreciated. In the first part, we present the definition of the concept, followed by a comparison between euphemism and litotes before analyzing the lexical and semantic characteristics of euphemism in French and Vietnamese. The second part of this work concerns the contrastive analysis of this figure according to the thematic areas in the two languages. Finally, in the last part, we propose some methods of translating euphemisms from French into Vietnamese and vice versa. Through this work, we have tried to define the peculiarities of the euphemism, the analogies, the differences as well as the obstacles to translating this figure of speech into the two languages.
