- Abstract
- This thesis is part of a Master's degree in History, more precisely in History and Communication at the Université catholique de Louvain. Born from the combination of two passions, History on the one hand, and video games on the other hand, this work intends to question the potential of the video game medium with regard to the historical discipline, both as an object of study, a pedagogical support and a communication tool. The corpus of sources is therefore made up of several video games representative of the main genres, which allows us to give a non-exhaustive but nevertheless significant overview of what is being done in the field of historical video games. In order to find some answers, a reading grid was developed to account for the type of relationship that a video game can have with History, by elucidating the degree of impact of the historical framework on the different aspects of the video game structure. At the end of this development, it emerges that several of these video game formats offer new possibilities for the practice of history, while raising the question of the posture to be adopted by the historian in the face of this phenomenon, upstream and downstream of it.
