Abstract
The therapeutic efficacy of antibiotics is dependent not only on the right choice of the drug, but also on the availability of sufficient concentration at the site of infection. One of the reasons that can limit this efficacy is interaction of the antibiotics with food. The aim of this thesis is to understand influence of such interactions on the absorption of tetracyclines, one of the antibiotic classes most prone to such influence. To attain this aim, a comparative analysis of scarce publications on the subject has been conducted. The research results show the degree of interaction depends on several factors including pharmacokinetic properties and formulation of the tetracyclines, the type/quantity of concomitant food or substance, and the time interval between administration of tetracyclines and eating. Detailed recommendations have been made regarding intake of tetracyclines to inform optimum usage. These recommendations will reduce loss of efficacy and maximize the chances of fighting infection, thus increasing treatment success.
