- Abstract
- In the aftermath of the Wars of religion, the Churches seek to establish themselves by means of the missions and the Propaganda Fide, whenever they could not do so by the force of arms. The painful creation of nation states as well as borders brings forth a slow centralisation. In the meantime, the Roman Church reforms itself further to the impetus of the Council of Trent, highlighting the role of bishops and missionaries. In the Pyrenees, resistances and side effects to the centralisation take the shape of unrest and military action, which form the background of Forcaud’s mission, besides deep social, religious and political mutations. He is known to us by means of the Relation (reports sent to the religious superior) at the bedrock of this study, of which he is the main writer and character. Though his imbeddedment with local authorities and worshipers the Father Forcaud gains a foothold as an authority figure. In spite of profound social inequalities during the 17th century, the Church was in our opinion the standard-bearer of meritocracy, which manifests itself by the growth of confraternities.
