- Abstract
- The topic of this Master’s dissertation revolves around the Woodstock festival, through the subtitling of the documentary "Woodstock - Three Days that Defined a Generation". The documentary subtitled for this thesis retraces and contextualises Woodstock’s musical event, as it is part of a particular historical context. Indeed, it embodies the effervescence and the climax of the hippie phenomenon at the time, which was itself part of the counter-culture movement of the 1960s in the United States. The counterculture movement left its mark on people's minds, particularly in the context of this mythic festival. The meaning and significance attributed to the counterculture by the youth of the time call for a closer look. Furthermore, given the variety of testimonies collected in this documentary, as well as its historical and political anchorage, subtitling this media allowed me to tackle many translation challenges, which will be detailed in this thesis, as well as the techniques used to offer a faithful adaptation to the audience.
