Abstract
In order to reduce discomfort and potential complications of traditional colonoscopy, capsule endoscopes are used for colon cancer screening. However, the image resolution of the actual capsule endoscopes for colon cancer is relatively low. This master thesis therefore studies the increase in image resolution by using a compression unit, while reducing the power consumption of the overall system. The capsule endoscope on which the study is based is the PillCam Colon 2 from Medtronic. The target image resolution is Full HD while the compression unit used for the study is the TICO-RAW codec from intoPIX s.a. The power consumption of the TICO-RAW codec is analyzed in order to determine the feasibility of the work as well as the power savings regarding the PillCam Colon 2. The different steps of the hardware design until the Place and Route step are performed, as well as a software analysis of the performance of the TICO-RAW codec in order to determine the parameters used for the use case of this work. After the Place and Route step of the TICO-RAW codec, a precise power analysis is obtained providing the total power consumption as well as a precise power consumption distribution among the different modules of the codec. This work allows to rethink the design of capsule endoscopes by modifying, adding or removing hardware units. The question of power consumption in the medical field is highlighted in order to increase the autonomy of capsule endoscopes.
