Abstract
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an innovative large-scale BRICS project dominated by China’s leadership and attempting to connect countries more prominently thanks to railways, roads and ports. Less tangibly, the BRI projects are also conveying in parallel the Chinese normative preferences, which is challenging the Western norms already in place. This thesis is focusing on the perception of the BRI in Europe, which is still at an early stage of implementation, as well as on the consequences for the European Union unity. Perceptions of the infrastructure projects and the danger for the EU’s norms are diverging between member states. Therefore, those BRI projects in Europe could possibly endanger the decisionmaking process and the European Union’s normative setting. The aim of this study is to evaluate the threat of Chinese investments through the BRI for the EU’s decision-making process and unity and analyze the Union’s response to this perceived threat.
