The perspective taking ability of the deaf person with a vestibular trouble: A case study

Abstract
Review of the literature : The people with vestibular trouble has an array of imbalance symptoms but also cognitive problems regarding visuo-spatial capacities. Until now, the scientific research mostly studied separately deaf individuals and the patients with vestibular troubles, without taking in account their interactions. Furthermore, few studies used subjective measures to assess the emotional impact of these impairments and their possible influence on perspective taking task. Hypotheses: The first hypothesis is that the patient with vestibular trouble will have worse performances on the dot-counting perspective -taking task compared to the healthy participants. The second hypothesis is that the scores to subjective tests (DHI, HADS & NVI) would influence the performance on the objective dot-counting perspective task. Methods : Eleven control participants and one deaf male with vestibular loss were recruited and accomplished a dot-counting perspective task.The participants also had to complete 3 questionnaires beforehand (DHI, HADS and NVI) in order to evaluate their mental state. Results : The first hypothesis was infirmed as there were no significant differences of performance in terms of reaction time and accuracy between the vestibular patient and the healthy participants. The second hypothesis is partially infirmed as two subtests of the NVI were positively correlated to the reaction time but these didn’t evaluate their mental state specifically. Discussion: As this was a case study, the interpretation of the results must be nuanced. Future studies could be realized with better conditions and with a more important number of participants. These future researches could then give insight on the divergence between deaf patients with or without vestibular troubles for perspective tasking and therefore understand to what extent they can consider other people points of views.
