Abstract
To what extent do the modern language curricula differ from one community to the other and what does it entail? The particular political context in Belgium indeed implies that different communities are competent in managing on their own different aspects of our lives. One of those aspects is education. In this context, it could be expected that the approach adopted for the teaching of modern languages would differ between the Flemish Community and the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (FWB). The comparative study realized for this MA thesis between the curricula of the official education network of the Flemish Community (the GO!) and those of the official education network of the FWB (the network Wallonie-Bruxelles Enseignement) revealed that this hypothesis was confirmed. This analysis also showed that the differences observed between the different curricula resulted in different language teaching approaches on both sides of the linguistic border. An analysis of the attitudes of the teachers in the FWB and in the Flemish Community however revealed that neither approaches were considered as efficient or adapted. In this MA thesis, those different aspects are further discussed and some recommendations are made based on the conclusions that could be drawn.
