Abstract
RESUME: The purpose of this research was to test the biomechanical properties of the forearm muscles using a novel device, the MyotonPRO. The device measures muscle tone, stiffness and elasticity. This study tested the age and gender effect on these three parameters. For this purpose, a sample of 117 healthy subjects was collected. A series of anthropometric data was also collected on this sample. After analysis of the results, it firstly appears that age and gender have an influence on the muscle tone, stiffness and elasticity calculated by the MyotonPRO. Secondly, it seems that the tone and stiffness parameters are related to the wrist joint range of motion. Thirdly, it seems that the MyotonPRO is able to discriminate between the properties of a muscle and a tendon. In conclusion, the MyotonPRO is an easy tool for demonstrating significant differences in muscle tone, stiffness and elasticity in the proximal muscles of the forearm in healthy subjects (men, women) aged between 40 and 80 years-old.
