Abstract
Human activity, based mainly on the use of fossil fuels, increases the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In this context of global warming, the University of Louvain wishes to structure its environmental policy and to engage in sustainable development. In order to determine the actions that will be most relevant and the most emitting sector of greenhouse gas emissions, the University made the decision to establish its carbon footprint. To achieve this objective, the methodology Bilan Carbone® is followed. Emissions from the University's five main sites were studied for 2017, and the assumptions used are clearly defined in order to ensure the longevity of carbon accounting in the future. The results show that the emissions mainly come from student and staff shifts, as well as the energy consumption of buildings. From this, several scenarios to reduce travel-related emissions were simulated to determine their true impact. It follows that each individual scenario has no real effect, it will therefore be necessary to group them together to achieve significant decreases.
