Abstract
How does the Italian immigrant in Belgium build his identity? Is this linked to his language practices? These are the two main questions of this master’s thesis articulated around three generations. The history of Italian immigration in Belgium is the context that encompasses this identity construction. The Italian emigrates from Italy and then immigrates into Belgium. He/She adopts certain language practices by choice, others by obligation. The language from his/her origin is a cultural skill that he/she is the only one who can transmit to the next generations of his/her family. In reality, what will finally be the behaviors of each immigrant and how can we justify them? The sociolinguistic survey, carried out over three generations by the author of this master’s thesis, helps to provide answers. Four families responded to this survey and are from Hainaut (Mons, Charleroi). This scientific research highlights the complexity of the identity concept for Italian immigrants.
