Abstract
At the end of the IVth century AD, Ambrose, bishop of Milan, wrote a treatise denouncing the practice of usury: De Tobia. The author uses the biblical figure of Tobias and an episode from his story to introduce a colourful argument about lending at interest. He develops a severe condemnation of this usage and attacks one of the most widespread practices comtemporary to his time. Without limiting himself to sterile criticism, he also proposes a new way for usurers and debtors: spiritual usury. This master thesis focuses on Ambrose's De Tobia. It aims to present this treatise, providing a study of the context of its writing and proposing the first freely accessible French translation (the one written by Mrs Blandine Cabaud in her Mémoire de lettres classiques [2001] remains limited in its access). In order to deepen this presentation, some thematic analyses and contextualisations are proposed, in addition to the various comments throughout the translation.
