- Objective: This systematic review, aimed to summarize and interpret the results of previously conducted studies on the effect of pain on proprioception in patients suffering from patellofemoral pain. Methods: An exhaustive search strategy was used throughout six different databases to find a wide variety of articles, without restriction on the timeline of publication, and the included languages were either English or French. Moreover, in order to have a well-structured systematic review, PRISMA guidelines were followed to optimize the work. Results: After reviewing the 9 included articles out of 1172, with a total number of participants (n=473), conflicting results were obtained, as some studies concluded that there is no alteration in the proprioception of knee in patients with PFP when compared with a control group, while others did find a difference. Interestingly, an alteration of the knee proprioception was also found in the asymptomatic knee in subjects with PFP. Conclusion: The different methodological conditions in each of the reviewed studies, and the different demographical characteristics of the participants, led to have conflicting results between them, while some of them found an alteration in joint position sense in patients with PFP others did not. Thus, this systematic review serves to show the importance of standardization of methods of conducting the experimentations and could be helpful for the future studies.
