Abstract
This MA dissertation is devoted to the comparison between Boualem Sansal’s 2084: la fin du monde (2015), José Saramago’s Ensaio sobre a cegueira (L’aveuglement) (1995) and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (La servante écarlate) (1987). The main objective of this comparative analysis aims at establishing the common features of contemporary dystopias from different cultural contexts regarding the handling of characters in their relationships to society, to the others and to themselves. To this end, the first part focuses on the characterization of contemporary dystopias and the description of the internal organization of their totalitarian system. The second part deals with the characters’ relationships to the dystopian community on the one hand, and to others on the other hand. The last part develops the dystopian characters’ relationship to themselves, the extent to which the dystopian context has deformed their personality and actions, both in reaction to their repressed condition and the elements of resistance that subjects have had to develop.
