Abstract
The purpose of this master thesis is to develop a type of welding based on a patented UCL process, the Friction Melt Bonding. For a weld bead, it has been the subject of research for the previous ten years. This thesis therefore aims to develop this concept in spot welding, the Friction Spot Melt Bonding. The major challenge of steel-aluminium welds is to reduce the intermetallic layer that forms at the interface between the two metals as much as possible. This brittleness layer makes the weld fragile. We automatized the testing process in order to analyse the parameters that influence its thickness and nature. The welds are analysed through microscope, the defects are recorded, as well as the evolution of the intermetallic layer thickness. The most relevant welds are kept and reused and go through mechanical tests to determine if the welds are viable.
