Abstract
For many decades, natural sciences institutions in the world have been digitizing their collections to be able to archive them, to reduce the handling of it and to “loan” it virtually without having to send the specimen away, which always represents a risk of loss or damage. Unfortunately, for small complex specimens as arthropods, solutions computing a 3D model simplify structures and erase crucial details for the specimens’ study. To answer this problem, we first set up a scAnt device [1] , an open-hardware scanner, for the image acquisition around a specimen. We then developed Sphaeroptica, a software that allows the visualization and 3D measurements of an object directly on 2D calibrated images. Even though we get back to the basics of photogrammetry, none of known photogrammetry softwares allows us to perform measurements directly on geo-referenced images with high resolution without the computation of a 3D mesh. Sphaeroptica also contains a virtual camera that synthesizes new views from existing ones, aiming at having a smoother overview of the specimen.
