- Abstract
- In the years to come, numerous bridges in Wallonia will need to be rehabilitated or even reconstructed, and the majority will probably be using precast prestressed concrete beams. This Master's thesis focuses on the issue of deflection in precast prestressed concrete beams used in bridge deck construction. The variations in upward deflection values of prestressed concrete beams is a consequence of the process of manufacturing, which can vary from one instance to another. This leads to fluctuations in the values of deflections which poses problem for the contractor to achieve a continuous longitudinal profile of the road. The objective of this work is to identify the main parameters influencing the deflection of a prestressed concrete beam. The approach combines experimental measurements and theoretical calculations based on the Eurocodes. This study includes measurements conducted in the precast factory and on-site, as well as laboratory testing of concrete samples coming from the beams. The results confirm significant fluctuations in deflection values for the same type of beam at their arrival on site. This paper concludes by identifying key parameters influencing the value of deflection over time.
