- Abstract
- Everything wears out with time, and fatigue and illness accelerate this process. But what about the representation, in the performing arts, of this long stage that underlines our finitude? To answer this question, we have devoted the first part of this thesis to the etymology of the French word ‘usure’ and the general context that can accelerate wear and tear in the performing arts in the 21st century. Then, we took the liberty of a detour among a few authors, including Tadeusz Kantor, William Shakespeare, Anton Chekhov and Maurice Maeterlinck whose writing and themes resonated with our subject. And finally, we have put together a corpus of five shows presented in Belgium between the years 2022 and 2024 to study in more depth the way in which wear and tear was staged there. Eg er vinden by Jon Fosse, by TG Stan (Ik ben de wind); Chekhov's Ivanov, directed by Georges Lini; One Song, a performance by Miet Warlop, Entracte! by Delphine Bibet and The Fortress of Smiles, by Kurō Tanino. Through the analysis of these works, we wanted to verify our intuition that wear and tear could be a powerful dramaturgical motive and along the way, we discovered that beyond the negative perception that wear and tear could have, sometimes there was love, often tenderness and always beauty.
