- Abstract
- Geographical Indications are an important tool for economic, territorial, social and ecological development. They ensure that a product’s quality, characteristics, or reputation are attributed to its geographical origin. Their protection is also one of the most important parts of recent EU Free Trade Agreements. However, issues arise from the process of negotiation of the agreements. This thesis helped to find that EU Geographical Indications that are registered in newer EU Member States are not protected enough in EU Free Trade Agreements and the list of EU GIs is not updated regularly in most of the agreements. Recent EU Free Trade Agreements are reviewed in the first part of the thesis. In the second part, a literature review is performed and an economic analysis of the issue is done based on the EU geographical indications register.
