Abstract
This article explores whether Greta Gerwig's 2023 Barbie movie presents a new form of sexual civility, by examining the contemporary sex and gender relations that the movie unveils. The study uses several methodological approaches to analyse the movie, including Larivaille's quinary model (1974) to structure the narrative of the movie, Greimas's actantial model (1966) to understand the roles and goals of the main characters, Kipling's 5W1H method to contextualise the production of the movie, and an in-depth thematic analysis to identify recurring themes concerning gender relations, sexuality, and sexual civility. The analysis reveals that Barbie (2023) reflects a transformation of gender and sexual norms, notably through Barbie's concept of non-maternity; the paradox between the absence of sexuality and sexualisation; the search for a new sexual civility; and the individualistic model of romantic relationships.
