Abstract
This meta-analysis aims to provide a clearer picture of the relationship between creativity and empathy. It provides an overview of how they have been studied together and the moderators can impact the magnitude of the relationship. The inclusion criteria were :1) English or French article ; 2) Quantitative studies; 3) Humans sample, including clinical population; 4) Available effect size or statistic measure to compute an effect size between empathy and creativity; 5) study was run over 1950. 18 studies were included from a literature search of four databases (PsyArticles, PsyInfos, PubMed, and ScienceDirect) over March 2022. Studies concern mainly Western countries, adult subjects in an individual setting. Creativity is mostly represented by everyday creativity, measured by a questionnaire on creative personality or social problem-solving skills. Empathy is mainly represented as cognitive empathy, assessed by questionnaires and self-report measures. Based on effect sizes, a three-level analysis model was used to measure the correlation between empathy and creativity. A significant positive correlation between the two constructs was found (r =.17; p =.0001). The cultural difference between western and eastern countries has a significant impact on the relationship (p = .01). It is discussed the ability of empathy to foster the essential dispositions of the creative process: tolerance of ambiguity, diversity of perspectives, and divergent thinking. In addition, several cultural aspects are proposed as possible influencing factors on the relationship. Because of the small number of included studies and the heterogeneous way in which the two concepts are studied together, additional research is needed to develop the circumstances of the relationship. Some guidelines are proposed.
