Atraumatic shoulder conditions in resistance training population: a narrative review

Abstract
Background: The importance of physical activity is well-established and resistance training (RT) offers diverse sport possibilities, attracting a broad range of individuals. While RT is generally safer than contact sports, injuries and conditions still occur, particularly in the shoulder, which is commonly affected. Objective: This study aims to summarize atraumatic shoulder conditions in the RT population and identify potential risk factors and mechanisms leading to these conditions. Design: Narrative review. Methods: Data collection was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane, and Science Direct, starting in October 2023. Studies included were published in English and met our PICOS criteria, focusing on those published within the last ten years, though 4 older studies were also included, totalling 32 studies. Results: We classified conditions into 3 groups based on Angela Cadogan's framework: shoulder instability, shoulder stiffness and painful shoulder, with a total of 8 conditions included. In addition, neurological disorders group was incorporated. Conclusions: This review gathers existing valuable literature on atraumatic shoulder conditions in the RT population and suggests possible associations, particularly regarding neurological disorders, psychological risk factors, and stiff capsule, with RT. These associations remain hypothetical, as they lack scientific validation.
