- Abstract
- BACKGROUND: Ankle sprain is one of the most common lower limb injuries. However, its prevalence in running is not established. OBJECTIVES: the first objective of this meta-analysis was to study the incidence of ankle sprains in military, recreational runners and elite runners. METHOD: Three databases were interrogated, i.e., Medline, Scopus and Embase. After which a systematic selection was underwent by two independent reviewers. Then, a random effect model was adjusted in order to establish proportion of ankles sprains in different subgroups of runners. RESULTS: At the end of the selection, 18 studies including 138 433 participants were selected. The results show a higher incidence of ankle sprain in elite runner (21%) followed by recreational runners (10%) and military (6%). CONCLUSION: Ankle sprains are not the injury with the highest incidence in runners. However, it has huge economic and social consequences and may lead to chronic ankle instability. This pathology is to be taken seriously in running and in the military. Prevention and effective treatment are essential.
