Abstract
In the context of the phenomenon of major failure in the first year of higher education, this master thesis attempts to provide a better understanding of the issue. To do so, it analyses the CESS exams, taken at the end of the rhetoric course, and the first year university exams in the Faculty of Philosophy, Arts and Letters of UCLouvain. This analysis is done from the perspective of scriptural competence as theorized by Anne-Sophie Romainville (2016). After a brief explanation of the background and the theoretical elements necessary for a good understanding of the phenomenon and the analyses carried out, this work seeks to determine the need to mobilise scriptural competence in the selected tests. These analyses lead to a comparison of the results obtained in order to provide new elements of understanding of the transition from secondary to higher education and the difficulties that young students may encounter during this transition.
