Abstract

Ce mémoire répondra à la question suivante : « Qui sont les divinités romaines liées au feu ? » Ce sujet a déjà été traité en partie par d’autres historiens comme Georges Dumézil ou Jean Haudry. Tout d’abord, les différentes parties du sujet seront définies : d’une part, ce qui est compris comme une divinité, d’autre part, les diverses caractéristiques qui expliquent la relation à l’élément igné. À cet effet, les fonctions, représentations, cultes, écrits antiques (littéraires et épigraphiques) et les théories modernes concernant chaque divinité seront analysés. Ensuite, les rapports qu’entretiennent Vulcain et Vesta, respectivement dieu et déesse du feu, avec cet élément, seront examinés. Puis viendra le tour des divinités mineures comme Stata Mater, Maia, les Lares, les Pénates et Fornax. Enfin, la dernière partie de ce travail se focalisera sur les enfants de Vulcain. This dissertation will answer the following question: “Who are the Roman divinities linked to the fire?” This subject has already been partially covered by other historians, such as Georges Dumézil or Jean Haudry. First of all, the different parts of the subject will be defined: on the one hand, what is understood as a divinity, and on the other, the various characteristics that explain the relationship to the fiery element. To achieve this, the functions, representations, cults, antique texts (literary and epigraphic) and modern theories concerning each deity will be analysed. Then, the relationship of Vulcan and Vesta – respectively god and goddess of fire – to this element will be examined. This will be followed by a look at minor deities such as Stata Mater, Maia, the Lares, the Penates and Fornax. Finally, the last part of this work will focus on Vulcan’s children.
